Learning Log #13

Learning Log #13
there are cards with letters on them and we have to say words that begin with the letters on the cards.
we also have space flash cards that show pictures of planets and on the back it shows the name of the planet. we also have flash cards with pictures of instruments on the front and on the back it has the name of the instrument.

We woke up at six thirty in the morning and then we got ready, and then our aunt came and picked us up at seven. And then we drove to the conference center and then we waited for an hour for the show to start.  And then this announcer came on and told us that we are not allowed to applaud for the first thirty minuets of the show. Because they were going to be recording it and selling the next year.  So there was a whole bunch of singing and dancing.  Alfie Boe sung a solo, and then this old man, the candy bomber, came on and told a story about someone who was in the war.  And then we listened to a few more songs. And then the screens had credits roll by, and when those were done rolling by everybody clapped.  Then we listened to abut thirty minuets more of singing and dancing. And then we hear Alfie Boe sing Bring him Home. And then they sung we wish you a Merry Christmas and then it was over.

Learning Log #12

We watched a movie about Jews in China and they come there on the silk road to China, I cant remember why.  We watched Brain Pop videos about the great wall of China.  It started out as a whole bunch of little walls and then they connected them. And the Great wall of china was a great protection for a long time. And then one time when there was an army attacking, one of the guards who stood at the gate opened it for the army.  Because the army said that they would pay him if he opened it.

Learning Log #11

We had a whole bunch of cinder blocks in our back yard and we were learning about Stonehenge.  Eva decided we should make a Stonehenge so we went out into the back yard and started building.  First we built a circle of upright cinder blocks. Then we laid the cinder blocks on top of the sideways.

We dropped of Littleton at his cousins house. Then Mama drove us downtown and we went to the same  theater where we saw The Little Mermaid.  We came early so we got to see them put together the set.  And it was cool.

We all got ready to go to the nativity with the cousins.  On our way there mom gave us a lesson on the 50's, 60's 70's and 80's.  When we got there we were afraid that we had missed it. We looked at nativities and then we found Carrie and she said it was starting again.  So we went inside and sat down and saw the nativity.  Afterwards we watched Carrie sing and then we went home.

When we were at the doctors office we were all board so Papa started talking to us about atoms.  And how atoms effect the heat in the room.  He said that if there were a certain amount of atoms in our rooms, and if we sealed off everywhere, and then took out half of the atoms in the room it would get colder.  And if you did it again and again and again it would get colder until there were only two atoms left. Then if there were only two atoms left and you took away one it would be as freezing as the north pole. But if you took away the last atom there would be no temperature in the room.  If you add more atoms and more atoms it would make it hotter because the atoms would hit each other more often.

History - Made a model of Stonehenge, Cultural lesson on the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's. Watched youtubes to go with above cultural lesson
Literature/ culture - Nutcracker with Ballet West, Nativity with the cousins
P.E.- Hop-ki-do
Life Skills - Speech and Debate
English - Shakespeare
Science - Discussion with Papa: History of the word atom, Basic subatomic particles (protons, neutrons electrons), Basic properties of electrons, protons and neutrons
basic Structure of an atom Nucleus and electron shells, triple point diagram, temperature is a function of atoms vibrating/ colliding, pressure and temperature are related to states of matter, space is a vacuum of atoms, so it is cold, and there is no protection from the sun

Learning Log #10

one day tumbelina in d I wondered hoe to turn a string of crochet on to something else like a sweater four for our baby brother so we asked the Internet and we found several ways to make a sweater but they were to complected and didn't make any sense then I found some thing that said easy baby sweater I was sick of being on the computer so I yelled I HOPE YOU ARE RIGHT then I looked at it and it was an easy way to make a sweater then tumbelina ind I thought that we could make curios and littleton sweaters for Christmas.
the problem was that we didn't have Any buttons or yearn so mama took us to the store and bought  us buttons and yarn then we went home and were watching the video and realized that littleton was not a baby he was a toddler this video is to complicated we should try some thing easier then mama asked every body if they wanted to learn how to crochet then we went back to the store and got cooler yarn and yarn beads then we got Crochet  hooks and needles  then we all went home and Crocheted till 12:00

the other day we woke up and mama said that it was time to go to our cousin house to make gingerbread houses, we made little houses and little slays.

one time in ancient China the Empress decided to eat in her garden so her attendants brought her her lunch while she was drinking her tea a white cocoon fell on to it the cocoon began to unravel in her cup then she looked up and saw that the trees were heavy with the white cocoon of the silk worm. she then grabbed the end of the thread coming from the cocoon in her cup started and unwinding ti  when she had unwound the hole thing it went three times around the garden, her attendant helped her unwind several more cocoon threads then the Empress twisted them together to make thread then gave it to a tailor who wove it in to a fine cloth, which was then made in to a fine robe.which she then gave to the Emperor.

Learning Log #7

"More learning logs? So I get to talk more!" Hugs says with excitement.

For Halloween we always make our own costumes.  We were Lord of the Rings this year.  And we needed to sew our ribbon onto our dresses for my belt.  So Mama got a blue piece of cloth that was extra from our cloaks and gave it to Tumbelina and me to sew ribbon leaves onto.  It was very hard because you had to poke through the leaf and make a very tiny stitch and then you need to make a very long stitch three leaves away on the bottom and then poke it out and make a little stitch.  So on and so forth. So there is little stitches on the front and huge stitches on the back.  We also had to sew our cloaks How we did this is we cut a half circle of cloth out of bed sheets.  And then we cut a straight line.  We put the straight line over our heads.  And the straight line was just big enough to touch our forehead and touch the back of our head.  And then it was not long enough so what we did is we pinched the part where it touched the back of our head, and then we pinched how long we wanted the hood to be. Then we put hair clipies in those two place to tell us where to sew and to keep our cloth together.  Then you start at one clipie and sewed all the way to the other clipie. And we had to make sure to sure stitch at the beginning or our string and at the end of our string.  And I sewed completely by hand.  Angelic taught me how to sew.  And then I taught my brother.  And while I was sewing I learned how to sew an x, I accidentally sewed an x.   Then you take your half circle of cloth and you take the flat side and you sew it to the part of your cloak where you have sewed down for your hood.  Right at the end of where you have been sewing sew out. Which makes like a shape sort of like a flux compositor or a triangle where at every point you draw a line into the middle.  Now we have made a cloak.

Yesterday we went to a Halloween party.  Which we thought was canceled because it was snowing.  But it was not canceled after all.  And so we all got into our costumes and then went to the pavilion.  Where people were setting up Halloween decorations.  Then we helped them set up.  And then we started playing games.  And I can never win at bean bag toss.  But I did  like the fishing game. And I won every single time we played pumpkin racing.  and then we went trick or treating and I went to every single table and said trick or treat.  And then after we went trick or treating we all voted for who we thought was the best costume or who had the best decorated table. And I won second place for the costume contest, and the jaws table won.

Mount Nemrud.  So there was this train guy and he said he found these statues there were very rare.  And then this guy decided to go and check out the statues. And then when they got their they discovered who made the statues. It was a king and the statues were of Greek and Persian gods. And one statue was of the king.  And there was huge hill behind it.  And people think that inside of the hill there is the kings tomb but nobody really knows.  People have tried to excavate but every time the tunnels keep collapsing and end up breaking the statues.  So now it is forbidden to dig into the hill because other wise it will come crashing down and ruin all the statues.   The hill is a whole bunch of limestone rocks, piled up on top of each other into a huge pile.

While we were watching the movie about Mount Nemrud Mama set out a whole bunch of boards for us to paint.  And then Tumbelina set up Littleton to paint a board. And surprisingly he painted very nicely and not very messy.  And then she set up Curious to paint a board and then she set up me to paint a board, and then she set up herself to paint a board.  And then she set up Angelic to paint a board until all the boards were painted.  And then tomorrow we are going to make them into decorations that go around our windows.

Learning Log #6

Ancient Mesopotamians made bricks out of mud and reads.  Tumbelina and I made bricks the same way and it worked great.  We also learned about Gobekli Tepe. Once a guy was grazing his sheep on a hill and he then saw a stone shaped like and ellipse.  And then he saw another stone and another and another and another and then he started to dig and then more people started to dig and then they found Gobekli Tepe.

In Mesopotamia they had scribes to write everything down so they would not forget important things like how much grain they sewed or stuff like that.  The scribes would write down everything that happened on clay tablets with reeds.  Their writing was called Cuneiforme it looked like wedges in the clay tablets.  When they were done writing on their clay tablets they would put them in the sun to bake and dry. And then the clay tablets would last for a very long time so that they would always know what happened the year before, and the year before that one.

In Saudi Arabia people have found on google maps strange shapes made out of rocks.  The strange shapes are kites, pendants, keyholes, wheels, chain walls and gates.  In a kite they would be shaped with two walls that are diagonal and as the get longer they get closer and closer together until  they are only a little bit apart.  And then there is a area and there are different groups in the area with very small doors, like it is divided into little pieces.  And how a kite works is the people would chase a herd of animals into the kite and they would go and go until they got to the very skinny end.  And then some of them would keep running and some would would run out and they all would get trapped in different sections of the kite. Then there would be sort of like towers that would protect hunters.  And the hunters would stand in the towers and kill the animals as they came into the kite.  And since the little parts of the kite would be divided by small openings. The animals would be kind of like flies in a fly trap. They would go in and they would not be able to find their way out. They would just crash into a bunch of walls and bounce around like bouncing walls.  Sure a few might get through one of the small openings. But then they would be in another compartment where they would just bounce around with the animals in there.  And pendants are a circle with a line coming out the bottom and it is said that at the circle there is someone buried there.  Then there were key holes which are a circle with a triangle coming off it it. They don't know what these are for but they think they are the same as pendants.  And then the wheels are just circles shaped like wheels with designs in them, they don't know what these are for.  And chain walls are like a huge line, they are not sure what these are for either.   Gates were like rectangles, they aren't sure what these are for either.  And all of these can not be seen from the ground. They can only be seen from google maps or from a helicopter or an airplane.

When I was drawing my map, Mama had instructions on how to draw a map of Mesopotamia.  first draw a line from one corner of your paper to the other, diagonally (This is your guide line).  At one end of the line put a sort of a U shape.  Then you draw a straight line along your guide line.  And it is very short.  And then you bump it out to the top and then it goes really close to the guide line again, but not touching it, and then it bumps out again and wiggles to the top.  And then for another river you go from the guide line and then you bump out on the other side and then you come close again but not touching the guide line, and then you wiggle along to the top again.  And then you have three little rivers coming off the top side and two rivers, one poking in one poking out coming off the bottom side.  And then you draw mountains around all the rivers so that every single one of your big rivers and little rivers connect to the mountains.  And then you have your map.

I would say more if I could say more but Mama wont type no more.

Hugs missed a learning log

I did two worksheets on grammar.

This is how to change your background.  You right click on your desktop and then you click on Persionalize and then you click on the background you want.  And then you make sure all the boxes are checked and then you click on when you want the background to change. And then you exit out of the tab and then you can watch your background change.

Mom told me to write in my notebook about what I learned in hopkido.  And I wrote all my rolls, all my punching exercises, all my kicking exercises.  And then I wrote down all my exercises and all my kicks and all my punches and all my falls.

When we were learning about North, East, South, and West mom took us to Dee's h ouse so that Angelic could mow the lawn.  She then told us to make a map from our house to Dee's house.

What I learned about the Salt Lake Valley.  I learned that the East Mountains are bigger then the West Mountains. And that when you go North and When you go south the mountains come to an end because there is an area there where you can drive through out of the valley.  And on the East Mountain the waterfall we went to with our Aunt.  And also on the East Mountains is the picnic area we go to with our grandma.  And that in the West Mountains there is the copper mine, and our cousins live there.

I learned in Life of Fred about deciduous and ever green trees and about boat leaks and a little bit about chess.

I am going to do my best to name off the Seven Wonders.  Great Pyramid of Giza, the statue of Zeus in Olympia, the lighthouse in Egypt, the Colossus in Rhodes, The big tomb that was made by the brother and sister who married each other. And then the brother died and the sister drunk his ashes.  And temple of Artemis. That's everything.

Learning Log #5

"I learned about  the epic of gilgamesh and about mesopotamia" (Hugs typed that, mom typed the rest.)

We learned about dimensions.  We learned about 3D objects in Blender.  And to make Suzanne's hat you make a cylinder and you make it sort of long and sort of skinny.  And then you take another cylinder and you make it short and stout. And then you put them together and then you put it on Suzanne the monkey.  And then Suzanne has a hat.  And then Angelic her cylinder was tilted a little, so her hat was tilted.

We learned that Sumeria was one of the first places to have writing.  And they were the people to invent the wheel.  They also were farmers.  And they owned live stock.  And they believed in the wind god, the earth god, the sky god, the salt water god, and the fresh water god, five gods.   And in Summer they had a Zigerat built to the god of wind.  And only the priest, the king and scribes were inside.  And the priests would preform crazy rituals all day, and the scribes would write down everything they do.  And at night they would stand on the zigurat and chart the stars so they could tell when the snow from the mountains would melt to come down into their rivers.  And then they could tell when to build their walls to block the river from overflowing. They also they made walls around every field with a  gate.  And then when one of the fields need watering they just opened the gate a little to water it, and then closed.  And then when the next field needed water they did it again. So on and so forth.

And we learned about the epic of Gilgamesh and how in the story of Gilgamesh, he was really tired so he decided to take a break under this tree. He had a plant of immortality, and when he woke up a snake had eaten the plant of immortality.  And then in another story in the Epic, one of the gods was very angry and we wanted to flood all of Mesopotamia and this other god did not want that.  So the other god told a man to take his sons and his wife and their animals, and go on a boat, and they were on the boat for six days, and then the guy sent out two birds one of them came back and the other one did not because he found a place to live.  So then they landed and they made lots of offerings to their god.

We learned how cave paintings were made.  They took a special rock and hit them together and ground them into a powder.. And then they would mix that powder with animal fat and I think water.  And then they would paint.  And that they believed they all came out of the middle of the earth. And that caves were a way into the middle of thee earth where they came from.  And so they would do weird ceremonies in their. And they would only paint on the part of the cave where it would echo through out the entire cave.  So that other people in the cave could hear them.  And before they went hunting they would go into a cave and do a strange ritual. And they had cave paintings of animal on the walls and then they would stab the animal they were going to hunt with their spear, to ask mother earth's permission to kill that animal.

Another Learning Log

I learned that spiders have eight legs and seven knees.

And I learned about Florence Nightingale.  Before she was a nurse she helped her fathers farmers if they were sick. And one time she saved a dog from dying who broke his leg. I learned that she was a nurse, and then she heard that hospitals in the war needed some nurses.  And her and her friends decided to go and help the hospitals at the war.  And the hospitals were absolutely disgusting.  And Florence Nightingale cleaned the hospitals and saved allot of guys lives.  And then she decided she wanted to go to the hospitals on the war front.  And there she got a sickness and almost died.  But she did not die, she just could not travel any more, and lots of people came to visit her.

And I learned about archeology.  I learned that pottery is one of the most important things to find.  I remember that most people think that if you find gold and silver or something like that, that's really important. But a simple piece of pottery can tell you allot.  And about why villages were built on hills, and when a house got burned or something the person who was living in it would flatten all the ruins and build on top of it.  And when the house got flattened by an earth quake they would just flatten all the ruins and build on top of it again.  So the hill just kept getting taller and taller and skinnier and skinnier.  Then the people on the hill have to move away because their hill does not have enough room on the top.

We were learning how to do 3D modeling, and we learned what thumb nails are and we learned how to download things, and how to zip files and unzip files.  And how to make files.  We learned about x,y, and z axis.  We had to download the zipping thing and the 3D modeling program.

In Life of Fred we learned about not equals and about how 3+4 does not equal 1, 3+4 does not equal 2 and so on and so forth.  You get the picture until you get to seven, and then say it does equal seven, ok.  And we listened to that all the way up to 58.

So in Europe everybody use to drive on any side of the road. And then the Romans attacked them and took over and made new laws, and one of their new laws was that you have to drive on the right side of the road. And then after a long time passed the people decided they were fed up with the Romans. And they were trying to get them off their land and so they switched around the way their laws worked.  And so they were not going by Roman laws and so instead they drived on the other side of the road instead of the right side.

Stories told by Hugs, about experiencing and learning about nature.

I also learned about how to catch fish. We were at a nature park and there were these fish swimming in a pond, and one of our friends brung a net.  And we wanted to see if we could catch a fish with it. I learned what you do is you scare the fish over to the net and then you wait for them to come. And they come because there was mosquito fish, the type of fish we were fishing, were mosquito fish.  And mosquito fish only live around the very edges of the pond, so we waited for one white and orange one to come over and eat the mosquito fish. And then it was eating so it wasn't looking at me and I grabbed it with my net.  And then the fish jumped out of my net.  And then I caught it again.  And then it jumped out again.  And then my friend grabbed my net and picked it up.  We would have kept the fish but our tank we had was too small.

And I learned how leaches look.  We were in our back yard fishing for crawfish's in our creek, and we saw something moving and then our friend scooped it out with a net to see what it was.  And then we brung it over to the moms to ask them what it was, and if it was a leach, and then mom said it was a leach.  And when we saw it in the creek it was all thin, but when we caught it it scrunched up into a ball.  And I'm really grossed out that there are leaches in there, I use to play in there.

And we have craw fish in our back yard and in our creek.  And we learned about crawfish and what they eat and what they do for protection.  Once Tumbelina and me were hunting for crawfish in the back yard, and then Tumbelina and me were waiting at the deepest part of the creek and we could not see any crawfish.  So Tumbelina and I decided to go down to the metal tube to see if any were there. And that day the water was trickling just perfect for crawfish.  And then we saw a little crawfish walking on the bottom of the creek, and then it went into a hole, and then we saw a smaller crawfish that was walking on the bottom of the creek.  And then we tried to catch the smaller crawfish.  And then we saw a bigger crawfish come up, and it ate the little crawfish. And Tumbelina and I were screaming and screaming, and Curious was inside eating cereal and he decided to come out and see what happened.  And then he asked us "What happened" and then we said that we just saw a craw fish eat another crawfish, and ti was down in there.
