Learning Log #6

Ancient Mesopotamians made bricks out of mud and reads.  Tumbelina and I made bricks the same way and it worked great.  We also learned about Gobekli Tepe. Once a guy was grazing his sheep on a hill and he then saw a stone shaped like and ellipse.  And then he saw another stone and another and another and another and then he started to dig and then more people started to dig and then they found Gobekli Tepe.

In Mesopotamia they had scribes to write everything down so they would not forget important things like how much grain they sewed or stuff like that.  The scribes would write down everything that happened on clay tablets with reeds.  Their writing was called Cuneiforme it looked like wedges in the clay tablets.  When they were done writing on their clay tablets they would put them in the sun to bake and dry. And then the clay tablets would last for a very long time so that they would always know what happened the year before, and the year before that one.

In Saudi Arabia people have found on google maps strange shapes made out of rocks.  The strange shapes are kites, pendants, keyholes, wheels, chain walls and gates.  In a kite they would be shaped with two walls that are diagonal and as the get longer they get closer and closer together until  they are only a little bit apart.  And then there is a area and there are different groups in the area with very small doors, like it is divided into little pieces.  And how a kite works is the people would chase a herd of animals into the kite and they would go and go until they got to the very skinny end.  And then some of them would keep running and some would would run out and they all would get trapped in different sections of the kite. Then there would be sort of like towers that would protect hunters.  And the hunters would stand in the towers and kill the animals as they came into the kite.  And since the little parts of the kite would be divided by small openings. The animals would be kind of like flies in a fly trap. They would go in and they would not be able to find their way out. They would just crash into a bunch of walls and bounce around like bouncing walls.  Sure a few might get through one of the small openings. But then they would be in another compartment where they would just bounce around with the animals in there.  And pendants are a circle with a line coming out the bottom and it is said that at the circle there is someone buried there.  Then there were key holes which are a circle with a triangle coming off it it. They don't know what these are for but they think they are the same as pendants.  And then the wheels are just circles shaped like wheels with designs in them, they don't know what these are for.  And chain walls are like a huge line, they are not sure what these are for either.   Gates were like rectangles, they aren't sure what these are for either.  And all of these can not be seen from the ground. They can only be seen from google maps or from a helicopter or an airplane.

When I was drawing my map, Mama had instructions on how to draw a map of Mesopotamia.  first draw a line from one corner of your paper to the other, diagonally (This is your guide line).  At one end of the line put a sort of a U shape.  Then you draw a straight line along your guide line.  And it is very short.  And then you bump it out to the top and then it goes really close to the guide line again, but not touching it, and then it bumps out again and wiggles to the top.  And then for another river you go from the guide line and then you bump out on the other side and then you come close again but not touching the guide line, and then you wiggle along to the top again.  And then you have three little rivers coming off the top side and two rivers, one poking in one poking out coming off the bottom side.  And then you draw mountains around all the rivers so that every single one of your big rivers and little rivers connect to the mountains.  And then you have your map.

I would say more if I could say more but Mama wont type no more.
